Sushi Mmmmaro
I’ve eaten at Sushi Maro plenty of times now – normally the delivery or takeout options, mind you, but I have dined in on a few occasions as well.
With my latest experience the food was great, as it generally tends to be, but it was a bit disappointing as they ran out of rice (!?) and my 15-20 minute wait to pick up my order turned out to be an hour. I had to walk there and back twice to finally get my meal for the evening (I know it’s only a couple of blocks away from me, but it still turned into a long waiting session that put a damper on my dinner).
As usual, the toro and amaebi (sweet prawns are my very favourite) were very fresh and rich in taste, and I tried a new roll called the Princess Roll, along with a chopped scallop roll. The Princess Roll is basically made up of tempura batter inside, along with another piece of prawn tempura laid across the top. It turned out to be crunchy, which can be fun for a different texture , but I think I like the standard dynamite roll a bit better - it has avocado in it as well and doesn’t give you that ‘too much deep-fried’ feeling in the pit of your stomach afterward.
Other tasty items I’ve had on past visits include the Dinner Bento Box B (lots of variety and a great price for $15.95, including tempura, tuna and sockeye sashimi, nigiri sushi, miso soup, and a salad), the Golden Roll (mango and smoked salmon – mmmmmm), the gyoza. I could also just eat a whole order of prawn tempura (although I’d probably be in pain afterwards). Really, I haven’t had anything here that I wouldn’t order again.
And on my next visit, I’m planning to try the sushi pizza – I just noticed it on their menu recently and it’s definitely peaked my curiosity. Let me know if you’ve had it before…
My recommendation? Stick to delivery for this place (usually 30-45 minutes). You’ll just need to order a minimum of $20.
